The Challenge
With a 27-year concession, MetrôRio is one of the main public transport companies in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). The concessionaire manages and operates lines 1, 2, and 4 of the Rio de Janeiro subway system. With 41 stations and a length of 54.4 km, the subway system transports thousands of passengers daily, shortening distances and contributing to the quality of life of the population by offering a faster, safer, and more sustainable means of transportation for locals and tourists. Currently, the company has more than 2,000 employees.
MetrôRio approached WayCarbon in 2014 to develop an internal indicator of emissions per passenger transported, but the need evolved over time, and, by 2023, the company faced the challenge of developing and structuring a centralized and reliable database for the indicators and atmospheric measurements collected over time.
Our Work
MetrôRio adopted the WayCarbon Ecosystem digital platform to account for greenhouse gas emissions from its operations, as well as water and waste management. WayCarbon provided support in parameterizing the modules and answering questions about the use of the system and sustainability issues, both through the support channel and in follow-up meetings. The company’s senior management, through the Operations and Maintenance Department, actively participated in the process through sponsorship and strategic support, ensuring the necessary resources (financial and human) and monitoring the main milestones and results of the work.
Results
The implementation of the system brought significant advances to MetrôRio’s environmental management. One of the main results was the organization and centralization of emissions-related data, allowing for greater reliability, traceability, and ease of auditing. With this structured foundation, it was possible to prepare the emissions inventory in a more accurate manner and in line with the GHG Protocol program, in addition to meeting the requirements of the annual sustainability report more comprehensively. The system also provided greater visibility into the data, which strengthened evidence-based decision-making and drove continuous improvement of internal processes.
