Case Gerdau

Management, Control and Digitalization of Carbon Accounting at Global Scale

The Challenge

As Brazil’s largest multinational steel producer with operations in nine countries, Gerdau wanted to advance its climate agenda, particularly in the management and control of its greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions.

The company seek a reliable, traceable, and actionable digital platform to support its GHG emissions monitoring, with capabilities to (i) support decision-making on mitigation strategies and (ii) reporting to investors and external stakeholders.

To achieve this goal, Gerdau needed to scale up emissions management across all its business units, at a global scale, and expand and improve its Scope 3 carbon accounting quantification and monitoring.

Our work

Under our transition value proposition, WayCarbon integrated almost two decades of expertise in carbon accounting and monitoring into a world-class software: Ecosystem. The digitalization of our consulting and strategic capacity provided Gerdau with a robust cloud solution to tackle its challenges.

The action plan kicked off applying a climate maturity methodology, to assess the readiness of each operation, and applied a bespoken methodology to track and manage GHG emissions considering Gerdau’s unique characteristics.

The project was phased in three waves allowing for implementation, learning and adjustments in three regions: Brazil (first year), North America (second year) and Latin America Countries (third year).

Results

WayCarbon Ecosystem – GHG and ESG Management standardized the management of GHG emissions from all Gerdau’s operational units in nine countries, dealing with distinct languages, emission factors and local circumstances.

The software became the official and secure source of data on which the company structures its decarbonization implementation strategy, providing reliable information on emissions, targets and reductions for all internal and external sustainability reports and communications.

Gerdau observed a fast increase in its climate change management maturity on the climate agenda. The company has gained greater confidence and is now able to use data to support decision making and move forward on its decarbonization journey.
