WayCarbon delegation participates in debates and presents projects at COP28

COP28 ended in Dubai on Wednesday morning, December 13th, after several deadlocks in negotiations on the final text, but with progress on the Loss and Damage and Fossil Fuel Reduction agendas.  The WayCarbon delegation, consisting of Felipe Bittencourt (CEO), Luisa Valentim (Head of Business Development), Melina Amoni (Climate Risk and Adaptation Manager) and Bruna Araújo (Sustainable Finance Manager) participated in 11 panels and meetings with private companies, governments and multilateral organizations.

During these meetings, the speakers presented projects and discussed topics such as energy transition, decarbonization, climate risks and adaptation, among others, with the aim of contributing to the global goal of a net-zero economy. See below for more details on the participation: 

  • Dec 5: Analysis of Climate Risks and Vulnerabilities in Porto Alegre 

The handover of the studies for the Analysis of Climate Risks and Vulnerabilities and the Water Footprint of Porto Alegre (RS) was formalized. The diagnosis is part of the city’s Climate Action Plan (CAP), carried out by WayCarbon, the World Bank and ICLEI South America. 

  • Dec 5: Project with the Government of Minas Gerais 

The project to be implemented by WayCarbon and Centro Brasil no Clima to support the Government of Minas Gerais in the implementation of its CAP, funded by the UK Government through the UK PACT program, was announced. The announcement was made during the “Minas Gerais Day: Climate Solutions for the Transition to a Low Carbon Economy in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil”. 

  • Dec 5: 3rd edition of the study “Opportunities for Brazil in Carbon Markets”

The third edition of the study “Opportunities for Brazil in Carbon Markets” was presented at the “Building an ETS: Global insights for Brazil in the Road to 2050” event. The study, published by WayCarbon and ICC Brazil in November 2023, focuses on analyzing the potential impact of the Brazilian regulated market. Download the study here

  • Dec 5: Discussion on energy transition

Luisa Valentim Barros, Head of Business Development at WayCarbon, participated in a meeting with the Council of Engineers for Energy Transition (CEET), of which she is a member. The focus was on the group’s main achievements in 2023. The CEET is a high-level global body made up of  engineers and energy experts that acts as an advisory body to the United Nations Secretary-General. 

  • Dec 6: Presentation of the plans for João Pessoa and Niterói

WayCarbon and ICLEI Brasil prepared the CAP for João Pessoa (PB), which was presented during COP28 by Mayor Cícero Lucena. The two organizations are also developing the Municipal Plan for Adaptation, Mitigation, and Resilience to Climate Change for Niterói (RJ), which will be partially presented  at COP28 and officially launched in January 2024. 

  • Dec 9: Climate risks in ports 

 The panel “Adaptation to Climate Change in the Maritime Sector”, promoted by the UN Global Compact during COP28 UAE, featured a presentation by the National Agency for Waterway Transportation (ANTAQ) on the work developed by WayCarbon to assess climate risks for 21 public ports in Brazil. 

  • Dec 10: Energy Transition

At the panel “Energy Transition and Agriculture” in the ICLEI pavilion, Luisa Valentim Barros, Head of Business Development at WayCarbon, discussed the pioneering efforts of Rio Grande do Sul in renewable energy production, particularly wind and biogas. She also highlighted the potential of ethanol in Brazil, where there is clear demand both domestically and for export. 

  • Dec 10 – Decarbonization in the food sector

The panel “Decarbonization Strategies in the Food Sector”, moderated by Felipe Bittencourt, CEO of WayCarbon, took place at the booth of the Legal Amazon consortium. Speakers included Raquel Ogando, Director of Sustainability at BRF, Ana Carolina Carregaro, Director of Institutional Relations at Nestlé and Orlando Nastri, ESG Manager at Citrosuco. 

  • Dec 10: Net-Zero Journey

Luisa Valentim Barros, Head of Business Development at WayCarbon, participated in the event “Envisioning a Net-Zero Built Environment through Energy Transition, Circular Economy, and ESG Principles”, organized by Curtin University Dubai. The panel also included Professors Dora Marinova, Atiq Zaman, and Asif Siddiqui. 

  • Dec 11: Adaptation to climate change 

Brazil is moving forward with discussions on thematic and sectoral adaptation plans, as Melina Amoni, Manager of Climate Risks and Adaptation, and Luisa Valentim Barros pointed out after a discussion led by Inamara Mélo, General Coordinator for Adaptation to Climate Change at the Ministry of the Environment. 

  • Dec 12: Hydrogen, Transportation and the SDGs 

Finally, Luisa Valentim  also spoke on the panel “Mythbusting with CEET Engineers: clean hydrogen, clean transportation, and clean cooking alignment and misalignment with the SDGs”, organized by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
